Design and install

A front yard that looks designed, not decorated.

Most Kansas City front yards were landscaped once, by the builder, with three junipers and a burning bush set two feet from the foundation. Twenty years later they are eight feet wide and pressed against the brick. Redesigning a bed is mostly deciding what actually belongs there — how wide the bed should be for the height of the house, how far off the foundation the plants have to sit, and which of them will still be the right size when they are done growing.

What you are actually paying for.

01

Bed lines drawn before anything is planted

We lay the shape out on the ground first and walk it with you from the street, because that is where it gets looked at. A bed that looks generous from the porch often disappears from the curb.

02

Mature size, not nursery size

The plant in the pot is not the plant you are buying. Spacing is set for what it becomes, which is why a new bed should look slightly sparse the day we leave.

03

Plants chosen for the spot they go in

Full west-facing brick is a different world from a shaded north side. Sun, drainage and how much room a plant has to grow decide the list before anyone picks a favorite.

04

Edged, mulched and finished the same visit

The install is not done when the plants are in. Cut edge, clean bed, mulch or rock to depth, and everything blown off before we pull out.

Also on the truck

One call covers the property.

Most of our customers book two or three of these together — it is cheaper than separate visits and it all gets done the same day.

Good to know

Landscaping Design & Installation — your questions.

Do you do the design as well as the install?

Yes — for most residential beds the design happens on site with you, laid out on the ground so you can see the shape before we dig. Larger or full-yard projects get a drawn plan first so you can approve the layout and the plant list before anything is ordered.

What is the best time of year to plant in Kansas City?

Fall is the best planting window here and spring is a close second. Fall planting gets roots established in warm soil while the top growth has stopped asking for water, so the plant goes into next summer already anchored. Mid-summer planting works but it lives or dies on watering.

Can you work with the plants I already have?

Often, yes. A lot of jobs are as much removal and relocation as new planting — pulling out the overgrown foundation shrubs, keeping the two things worth keeping, and rebuilding the bed around them.
