Patios, walkways, pavers

Pavers move when the base moves.

A paver patio is a stack: compacted subgrade, several inches of graded aggregate base, a thin bedding layer, then the stone. Almost every failed patio in Kansas City failed in the first two layers. Our clay holds water, water freezes, and anything set on soft or shallow base heaves out of level the first winter and never comes back. So the part of the job that takes the longest is the part you will never see.

What you are actually paying for.

01

Excavated to depth and compacted in lifts

Base goes down in layers and each one gets compacted. A single deep dump of gravel run over once with a plate compactor is soft in the middle, and it will show up as a dip.

02

Pitched to drain

A patio is built with a deliberate fall away from the house — enough to shed water, not enough to feel. Flat is not level; flat is a puddle.

03

Edge restraint on every free edge

Without it the perimeter pavers walk outward, joints open, and the field loosens from the outside in. It is the cheapest part of the job and the one most often skipped.

04

Joints filled and compacted in

Swept and vibrated so the sand locks the pavers against each other. A properly locked field carries load as one surface instead of as loose pieces.

One call covers the property.

Most of our customers book two or three of these together — it is cheaper than separate visits and it all gets done the same day.

Good to know

Hardscaping & Paving — your questions.

What types of hardscaping do you handle?

Paver patios and walkways, stepping-stone and flagstone paths, decorative rock and river-rock installations, natural stone bed borders, and retaining walls. Larger structural work — poured drives, footings, anything engineered — is outside what we take on, and we will say so.

How long does a paver project take?

A walkway is often a day or two. A patio typically runs several days to a week depending on size, access, and how much excavation the grade needs. Weather moves it more than anything else — base cannot be compacted properly when it is saturated.

Will pavers shift or settle over time?

Properly built, they will stay put for decades, and the individual pavers can be lifted and reset if something ever does move — which is a real advantage over poured concrete, where a crack is permanent. Settling almost always traces back to a base that was too thin, not compacted, or laid on saturated clay.

5 years, one owner

One Owner, 100% Service Guarantee.

The person who walks your property and gives you the price is the person doing the work — five years of it across this metro. Nothing is handed to a subcontractor and nothing is quoted by someone who will never see the job. If any part of the finished work is not what we agreed, tell us and we come back and put it right. That is the whole guarantee, and it is easy to stand behind when one person is accountable for every job.
